Detecting Child Myopia
Myopia or short-sightedness is an eye condition that causes blurred distance vision. It is important to manage myopia and slow down its progression. If not managed, there are sight-threatening conditions that can follow. These include myopic maculopathy, retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataracts.
We screen for child myopia, and a range of other vision conditions, as part of our comprehensive 360° Eye Test.
For children diagnosed with myopia, we also offer a dedicated Child Myopia 360° Exam. This includes a comprehensive eye test, as well as an evaluation of family history, environment and binocular vision. We will also discuss and assess potential treatment options.
Treatments can include special contact lenses, including MiSight lenses by CooperVision and MiyoSmart lenses by Hoya, which have been shown to help slow down myopia progression and reduce the risk of eye conditions later in life. Alternatively, orthokeratology is a safe and reversible treatment that involves wearing a hard contact lens overnight to correct the shape of the eye during the day.
At Optometrist Parramatta we strive to educate our patients and reinforce that just giving a pair of glasses is not necessarily slowing down myopia progression. We use a range of management options, tailored to the individual.

Does Your Child Have Myopia?
Only professional screening can accurately detect myopia, and distinguish it from other vision conditions.
As children often assume their vision is normal, symptoms may also go unreported or misinterpreted. Therefore it is important to have your child’s eyes tested regularly by an Optometrist.
However, some indications that your child may be experiencing difficulties associated with myopia may include:
- Your child’s distance vision becomes blurred
- They move closer to see the television
- Your child may not be performing as well at school
- They complain of headaches
- Your child has tired eyes
- They are squinting or screwing up their eyes.
If your child is displaying unexplained changed in their vision, we recommend making an appointment for an eye exam as soon as possible.
Regular eye tests are also crucial for managing vision development. Children are recommended to have their first eye test at age four, and then regular comprehensive eye tests every three years.
For children diagnosed with myopia, we recommend a Child Myopia 360° Exam every 12 months to monitor for changes and evaluate treatments.
