Glaucoma Screening and Management
Glaucoma is an eye condition that gradually damages the optic nerve, leading to progressive and irreversible vision loss.
The optic nerve is responsible for transmitting visual information from the eyes to the brain. In glaucoma, this nerve is damaged, typically due to increased pressure within the eye. However, other factors like trauma or eye surgery can also affect the optic nerve.
It is often referred to as the ‘silent thief of sight’ due to its slow progression and lack of obvious symptoms until significant vision has been lost.
While anyone can develop glaucoma, certain risk factors increase your likelihood, including:
- Family history of glaucoma
- Over 40 years of age
- Diabetes or migraines
- Steroid medication use
- Previous eye surgery or trauma
Self-monitoring for glaucoma is difficult as vision loss occurs gradually from the periphery inwards. Because of this, many people remain unaware they have glaucoma until significant, irreversible vision loss has occurred.
Regular comprehensive eye exams are crucial for early glaucoma detection. During our 360° Eye Test, your optometrist will measure your intraocular pressure and evaluate your optic nerve health, conducting further testing if needed.
We also offer a specialised Glaucoma 360° Eye Exam including a comprehensive eye test as well as additional tests to monitor and manage glaucoma effectively. We recommend patients with glaucoma schedule this exam every 12 months.
If you have a family history of glaucoma or other risk factors, don’t delay – book your appointment today. Early detection and adherence to treatment are vital to prevent vision loss from this ‘silent’ condition.
Early detection is key
Glaucoma cannot be cured, but its progression can be controlled with treatment to preserve remaining vision. Management options can include eye drop medication, surgery or laser treatment.
